Description:
Sunday 9 am with Rebecca Smith
Led Primary Series
Some knowledge of the primary series of ashtanga yoga required.
This is a guided practice of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Vinyasa. Starting with sun salutations, the teacher will lead students through the standing postures, seated postures, and closing postures including backbends, shoulder stands, and headstands. The teacher will count the practice at a steady pace, providing verbal cues when needed throughout. Students who are not familiar with the entire sequence can do the practice up to the point that they know, then take savasana. It is best to learn each posture from a teacher before attempting to do the entire sequence of postures.
Other opportunities to practice Ashtanga Vinyasa:
Friday mornings, 9:30 am with Lori Chase
Ashtanga Basics
No previous experience required.
In this class we will explore the postures, concepts, and tools of ashtanga vinyasa including breath (ujjayi breathing), bandhas (physical/energetic locks), Drishti (gaze), and the eight limbs of yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Focus will be mostly on the Primary Series postures, and other tools that help to prepare students for more challenging postures. This includes Sun Salutations, standing, seated, and closing postures. We will explore backbends and inversions. Modifications and variations will be offered. Learn how to avoid common injuries from practice. This class is open to anyone who is interested, from new learners to long-time practitioners who want to get back to the basics or go deeper into their practice.
This class can help prepare students for self-practice and/or the led class on Sundays.
Monday – Friday 7 – 9 am
Ashtanga Vinyasa Self-Practice
Some knowledge of the primary series required.
This is a self-guided practice for people who have learned at least the sun salutations. Students will practice on their own. This is not “mysore” or “led” practice. It is simply a space for ashtanga students to do their morning practice with other students. Students will practice what they are each working on, in their own time. Students can come in and leave anytime between 7 – 9 am. Come and do your practice with other dedicated students!
