Traveling through Yellowstone in winter one feels as if they are traveling back in time to the early explorations of the park. It can be one of the coldest, harshest environments in the region. But it is also a place where unexpected splashes of color appear out of the monochrome landscapes of white snow and grey skies. Christian’s photographs celebrate these captivating scenes.

Inspired by the color pallet of the early painters like Thomas Moran and Abby Hill, Christian uses the historic photographic printing process of gum dichromate where layers of color are added to a monochrome blue cyanotype print, echoing the layering of travertine deposits and the tinting of micro- organisms that flourish in the hot springs.
