Twenty years ago, two ceramic artists at the University of Montana came together to show their work at the University's Art Annex. Janet Whaley and Mo Gary were non-traditional students in their 40s, both had long careers in health care, and both have become well-known members of Missoula's art community. When the two came together to show their work, it became the beginning of a long friendship that has been enriched by their life experiences and art. Over the intervening 20 years the two have exhibited in shows and galleries in Montana.

Her Heart is a collaborative show that details their growth and experiences personally and artistically. Mo's concrete, earthiness and love of nature is solidified in woodfired and raku works. She refers to herself as a "pyromaniac" and loves the community effort necessary for both of those firing styles. The unexpected passing of Mo's husband two years ago has informed her in a series of works she calls "Heart Strings" which are featured in the show. Janet's early introduction to Montana's natural beauty combined with her love of exploring myths and fairy tales, especially the mermaid myth, shapes her work. Porcelain is her canvas where she uses underglazes slips and luster to create pieces that depict the day-to-day activities of living as well as myths and fantasy

Her Heart will be on display at the Clay Studio of Missoula from November 7-28, with an opening on Friday, November 7 from 5:30-9pm.
