The didactic portion of this course will introduce participants to basic principles of the art therapy profession. Participants will learn about clinical populations that benefit from art therapy and the settings in which art therapy often takes place as well as how art therapy is conducted and the various ways that these therapeutic techniques benefit those who engage in them. We will also explore differences between art therapy and art education.

Several experiential exercises throughout the course will increase participant understanding of clients' experiences of art therapy. This course aims to instill participants with a basic knowledge of what art therapy is and how it is used across settings. Participants will also gain familiarity with some practical exercises for use with clients in mental health treatment settings.

This class is limited to those with some expertise in the field of mental health treatment including students in the field. Psychologists, psychotherapists, social workers, counselors, hospice workers, school mental health personnel, or others with equivalent education and experience working within the field of psychotherapy are all welcome to take this course.
