Radius Gallery presents deliciously imaginative new artworks by Courtney Blazon and Susan R. Carlson, two artists known for taking inspiration from language to create wonderfully works, complete with multi-layered visual, sonic and cultural echoes.
The title of the show--EVERYONE IN ME IS A BIRD--is taken from an Anne Sexton poem and captures the sense of surprise, strangeness and pregnant incubation of living, developing thought you'll find expressed in these individual artworks.
Although Blazon and Carlson use different mediums, their art emulates traits of good books--allowing for mystery and suspense, respecting the viewer as an active and engaged reader, and inviting multiplicity in interpretation.
Recognizable authors you'll find in Blazon's pen and marker works include Sylvia Plath, Dorothy Parker, Anne Sexton, Richard Brautigan, Hart Crane and the doomed Romantic poet Thomas Chatterton. Carlson's collage works allude to Ernest Hemingway, David Foster Wallace, Hunter Thompson, and Plath and Sexton as well.
