A Beginner's Guide to Practical Design & Usability
12:00 PM (America/Denver)
Innovation Factory
Description:
As part of 30 Days of Innovation, we welcome software engineer Stephen Sisk to share his experience leading design teams. While many introductions to design are based in the idea that you have infinite time to design a perfect product - this workshop will discuss a more practical approach based on a non-designer's experience building software on tight deadlines with few resources and high expectations.

We will discuss an engineer’s view of:

1. Improving your product during the planning phase by using design principles

2. Ensuring your product can be used successfully by customers by doing lightweight usability testing.

3. Approaches to common hard problems like “My customers hate it every time I change the product”

We will then collaborate as a group to design a usability test for a real piece of software - if you have one, feel free to bring a design problem you'd like to test. And while all of this is based on experience in the software industry, but is more broadly applicable to any design problem!

Stephen enjoys leading teams to build usable software. He has 15 years of experience in the software industry working at Google, Microsoft and various startups, and has worked on consumer and enterprise products used by millions of people.
