Class Descriptions:
Cracking the Silence: Memoir Writing / / Susanna Sonnenberg:
We will use generative prompts to ease into and open up difficult subjects; to explore the limits we impose on ourselves and those imposed by others. This class is suitable for all levels, whether the student is interested in starting a short piece or already has a manuscript. No submission is required beforehand. Participants will be expected to share and to give feedback to their fellow writers.

Shape-shifting: Inhabiting the Many Shapes of Fiction/ /Dana Fitz Gale:
This workshop will explore questions of tension, voice, dialogue, and character in novels and stories, using Jerome Stern’s classic book, “Making Shapely Fiction” to guide our discussion. Read examples from well-known writers and hone your own skills through in-class writing exercises. You will have opportunities to share your own work if you so choose, but this will be optional.

Reimagining Environmental Writing/ / Emily Withnall:
Nature writing and environmental writing are often narrowly conceived as fly fishing or backpacking celebrations, or journalistic advocacy about an aspect of the climate crisis. In this generative workshop, however, we will flip traditional understandings of environmental writing by reading work that pushes the traditional boundaries of the genre. The readings will serve to help us redefine and reimagine environmental writing. With these new definitions in mind, we will then dive into our own writing.
