Description:
Fall 2026: Introductory Pottery 6-Week Session
Thursdays, 2-5PM (September 17 to October 22, 6 classes)
Teaching Artist: Kai Fukunaga
TUITION: $220 members / $230 nonmembers
Beginning level: no prior experience needed.
A primer to get you started in the world of clay! This beginner-friendly class will orient you to the basic technique on the potter's wheel, as well as how to use very basic hand-building skills to create and embellish simple pottery forms such as cups and bowls. You'll also learn basic glazing techniques to bring your pottery to life with color and shine. This class is a great entryway if you’ve never worked with clay before, or makes an excellent refresher if you've been out of the studio for a while. Students may progress further over their time in this class, the goal is to become comfortable with the material and studio to prepare for future adventures in clay.
This class will cover creating basic forms: focus will be on variations of cylinders and bowls. Learn and practice to center, open, and pull a basic form, and begin to understand how to control which form is created. Students will also learn the basic trimming process to add a foot and remove some excess weight from pots, as well as how to create simple attachments such as handles and feet. Basic surface decoration with glaze will be covered. Discussion of basic slip use may be included if time allows. This class will get you started or make a good refresher, but will not cover everything our 10-week beginning class covers.
GOAL: gain understanding of the basics of pottery
NOT COVERED: sculpting or non-pottery building, advanced hand-building techniques, sets, in-depth/advanced decorating, spouts, lids, altering thrown forms beyond basic trimming, challenging tall or low forms, advanced sculptural pottery, measurement, sets or repeat throwing, or lidded or multi-part forms.
INCLUDED:
First bag of clay
Access to community clay tools.
Firing fees for all items made during 6-week class session (size limit- maximum 20" in any direction)
Access to open studio appointments for work time outside of class; for the length of class
Access to open studio appointments for glazing only for about one month after class
Students must follow all studio health and safety guidelines. Student waiver required at registration or on the first day of class every session, and an up-to-date emergency contact must be provided for studio records.
