Rattlesnake Creek
11:00 AM (America/Denver)
University of Montana
Description:
Free with a purchase of a $40.00 annual membership.

In 1904, the lower Rattlesnake Creek dam was built four miles upstream from the city as the primary water source for the growing municipality. Then in the 1920s, ten dams were built on high mountain lakes in the headwaters to augment storage capacity for the city during low flows. Cumulatively, the dams impeded upstream fish migration, caused severe dewatering in the lower section of Rattlesnake Creek and slowly diminished the native fishery. In the past two decades, Trout Unlimited, the City of Missoula, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and other partners have implemented numerous projects to restore the creek. This presentation will focus on the history of use of Rattlesnake Creek, the planning and methodology behind these projects and the future of Missoula’s iconic waterway.
