Exhibition Reception for "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues"

Exhibition Reception for Description:
Our October exhibition, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, features the work of Shelsea Dodd and Sam Momeyer. Both are currently long-term resident artists at Studio 740 and reside in Helena, MT, where they live together with their dog, and their two cats.

Shelsea Dodd’s sculptural work primarily investigates feminist and LGBTQ/queer issues, as well as human/animal relationships and the parallels she perceives between the two. Livestock and other domesticated animals are the most represented in her works. “Our treatment of livestock is too often mirrored in the treatment of our fellow human beings. These animals are viewed as unfeeling and inanimate, and human minority groups deemed inferior are reduced to something subhuman, something beastly. My experiences as a queer woman in today’s political climate have sensitized me to these nuanced archetypes.”

Sam Momeyer creates functional objects, with the surface of a pot acting as a small, personal landscape, to be explored by sight and touch, “offering up a tiny place to ruminate and ponder amid the clamor of modern life.” Her color palette is influenced by the rich colors of Alaska and Montana, and her forms are inspired by the architectural landscape of her Pittsburgh childhood, with elements of exaggeration in line and shape borrowed from skateboard graphics, the flow of a well-built skate park, and graffiti.
