2021 Welcome: Territorial Acknowledgment With Aspen Decker

This year, we will be welcoming audiences into our virtual space with a territorial acknowledgment, presented by Aspen Decker in both English and in Salish. Aspen will be introduced by Festival Director Lauren R. Korn. Short conversation to follow.

The Montana Book Festival is proudly sponsored by Arts Missoula and will be recorded by Missoula Access Community Television as part of a Media Assistance Grant donated to the Montana Book Festival by MCAT.

ABOUT ASPEN DECKER
Aspen Decker is a proud member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (T?at?ayáqn Séliš). Currently she is an M.A. student in linguistics at the University of Montana. She earned a B.A. in tribal historic preservation from Salish Kootenai College. Aspen is a Salish language instructor at the Salish Kootenai College. She is one of the last of 17 fluent Salish speakers left today, and she speaks only Salish to her four children and raising first language speakers of Salish. Aspen was recently awarded a grant from the Endangered Language Fund (ELF) for her project “k???ep Qe Sox??èp (revive our roots) language project for creating a seasonal curriculum, that teaches Indigenous knowledge and Séliš epistemology together with Séliš language.
