The Search for New Antibiotics in a Toxic Wasteland
3:00 PM (America/Denver)
University of Montana
Description:
Free with a purchase of a $40.00 annual membership.

Where do drugs come from before they end up packaged in the Pharmacy? Natural products organic chemist Andrea Stierle will describe how she and her partner, Don, devote their research lives to drug discovery. Their search began in the pristine waters of Bermuda, the temperate rain forests of Glacier National Park and the Pacific Northwest. Since 1995, however, they have mined the microbes of the Berkeley Pit, an acid mine-waste lake in Butte, Montana, for compounds with promising bioactivity. They have found compounds that can block the metastatic spread of cancer and compounds that can mitigate inflammation. Their most recent discovery is a novel antibiotic that targets multi-drug resistant Staphylococcus aureus without inducing resistance in S. aureus. Andrea will describe their research journey.
