Doc's Return: Combat Medic goes to Vietnam 50 Yrs Later Description:
As a young man, Alan Johnson wanted to see a war firsthand, and enlisted in the US Army. He joined the Army in Fall of 1968. In March of 1969, he found himself in Chu Lai Base in the Republic of South Vietnam, a combat medic with the 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry of the Americal Division.

Over the next 12 months, he would see plenty of war on the hilltop fire-bases and in the jungled valleys and ravines of Quang Tin Province.

In May of 2019, Alan returned to Vietnam. 50 years had passed since he last slung his medical bag and went out beyond the perimeter with his platoon.

In this presentation, Alan will discuss his experiences in the Vietnam War, his role as a combat medic, and what it was like to re-visit the country that he had last seen amid a war.

Lecture held at Building T1 on the second floor.
