The Evolution of Influenza
7:00 PM (America/Denver)
University of Montana
Description:
Join us on Wednesday, Aug 5, for “The Evolution of Influenza."

This week’s Alumni Virtual Engagement provides a unique opportunity to experience an actual lecture delivered by a UM faculty member during the spring semester after classes were moved online. UM professor Doug Emlen will share a timely lecture titled “The Evolution of Influenza,” which he delivered to his Honors Biology class.

Dr. Emlen describes the 1918 Influenza pandemic and draws incredible comparisons with the COVID-19 pandemic. We will all watch the class together and then he will answer your questions. Note: This session will run for an hour and 30 minutes.

Douglas J. Emlen studied at Cornell University (B.A. 1989), Princeton University (Ph. D. 1994), and Duke University (Postdoctoral Research Fellow 1994-1997), before joining UM where he is a full professor. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2016) and a recipient of the U.S. Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering (2002).

His book "Animal Weapons: The Evolution of Battle" (Henry Holt, 2014) won the Phi Beta Kappa science book of the year award in 2015, and his textbook "Evolution: Making Sense of Life" (co-authored with award-winning journalist Carl Zimmer), is presently adopted by more than 250 universities and colleges. His first narrative nonfiction book for middle school readers "Beetle Battles: One Scientist's Journey of Adventure and Discovery," (Roaring Brook/Macmillan) appeared on shelves this past December.
