Reception for Tessa Hoenig- BLOAT Description:
Tessa Hoenig’s exhibition, BLOAT, celebrates the conclusion of her time as Resident Artist at The Clay Studio of Missoula. Since arriving at the Clay Studio, Tessa has seemed to make work out of anything, but clay, and is excited to present her first collection of multimedia works.

Tessa’s most recent work investigates personal questions surrounding food and consumerism. Each person has been taught specific values regarding food, and thus has certain baggage relating to food. Food is irreconcilably wrapped up in money, profit, and insecurity. It is thus inherently at the whims of industry, which has little sympathy for the environment and the worker. Food is also inseparable from issues of convenience, eating disorders, and mental health. How should humans make practical decisions regarding how to eat, without inherently hurting something, someone, or even themselves?

With every source of information battling for attention, each informed by its own bias, it seems nearly impossible to make a decision on what actions will best help the world. As both a non-meat eater and a person versed in disordered eating, the intention is never to shame others for any food decision. Tessa hopes to begin a conversation regarding food, one which emerges out of mutual respect. Anyone who eats any food should know the costs of where it came from.

Tessa Hoenig is a sculptor dedicated to creating objects that feel abundant, textural, and overwhelming, physical dreamscapes of her overactive imagination. Originally from Fort Collins, Colorado, Tessa obtained her BFA in Pottery in 2020 from Colorado State University. After graduating, she moved to Missoula, Montana and was granted a 2 year position as a Post-Baccalaureate student at The University of Montana. Tessa is currently a long term resident at the Clay Studio of Missoula.

This exhibit continues through August 31. Gallery events are free and open to the public.
