Hellgate Mineral Society Meeting
7:30 PM
First Christian Church
Description:
Local historian and geologist Ted Antonioli will speak on early mining for flint in the Flint Creek Valley which has a been a center of hunting and mining activity for over 200 years. Archaeological work near Philipsburg has revealed bison hunting dating back thousands of years, and extensive chalcedony quarries in the area have produced material for stone tools and arrow points. Flint Creek's tributaries and nearby streams produced a bonanza in beaver pelts, but it was the discovery of gold that has become a legend, Montana's El Dorado. Ted will present evidence that Montana's first gold discovery in 1849 was made by the Salish and fur traders in a tributary of Flint Creek.
