SUMMER 1: Understanding Ceramic Materials

A special topics session, recommended for students who have taken at least one class before, and wish to deepen their understanding of how clay and glazes work.

Learning the basic elements of a clay, glaze, and how to fire them will help you build confidence in your ceramic work! This course is recommended for students who have a general understanding of the basics of clay and will give you tools to navigate the world of ceramic chemistry, glaze recipes, and firing schedules. Enrich your understanding of the materials within your clay and glaze and gain the confidence to expand your pallet within your practice. This class has a focus on lecture and glaze mixing during class time. Each student may expect to mix a total of 1000g of glaze and 20 test tiles within the scope of the class.

GOAL: Deepen your understanding of ceramics by exploring the materials in clay and glaze.

Class clay supply for making test tiles
Materials for 1000g of glaze
Access to community clay tools
Firing fees for all test items made during the 5-week session (must be within studio size limit).
Access to open studio appointments to create test tiles/items outside of class

Students must follow all studio health and safety guidelines. Student waiver required at registration or on the first day of class every session, and an up-to-date emergency contact must be provided for studio records.
