Summer 1 | Beginning Pottery Intensive | WED | 6/17 - 7/15 | 2-5PM Description:
SUMMER 1: Wednesday Beginning Pottery Intensive
Wednesdays, 2-5PM (June 17 to July 15, 5 sessions)
Teaching Artist: Kaley Cross
TUITION: $195 members / $205 nonmembers

Beginning level: no prior experience needed.

A well-rounded basic pottery class! Learn to create simple pottery forms, mostly on the wheel, with inclusion of some basic handbuilding methods. Perfect for entry level students, or a great repeat for a refresher, relearning basic methods, or to continue practicing the basics.

This class will cover creating and improving basic forms: focus will be on variations of cylinders and bowls. Learn and practice to center, open, and pull a basic form reliably, and begin to understand how to control and customize which form is created. Students will also learn to trim forms to improve their shape and weight, as well as how to create simple decorations and attachments such as handles, small decor, and feet. Basic surface decoration with slip and glaze will also be discussed. More advanced students may progress further independently. This class is half its regular length for our 5-week summer sessions, great for those on a budget, but will move at a quicker, more intense pace.

GOAL: gain understanding of the basics of clay and pottery, and feel comfortable throwing small, simple forms on the wheel.

NOT COVERED: sets, in-depth decorating, spouts, lids, altering thrown forms beyond basic trimming, challenging tall or low forms, advanced sculptural making, or measured/repeat throwing.

INCLUDED:
First bag of clay
Access to community clay tools
Firing fees for all items made during 10-week class session (size limit- maximum 20” in any direction)
Access to open studio appointments for work time outside of class; for the length of class and about 1 month afterward for glazing.

Students must follow all studio health and safety guidelines. Student waiver required at registration or on the first day of class every session, and an up-to-date emergency contact must be provided for studio records.
