Camp is on!

We will begin with Session 1 on June 15 as originally scheduled. Camp is going to look, feel, and be different compared to camps offered in the past. What is most important is that we plan on getting your children out of your home, keeping them active through recreation, engaged with others, crafting, and having FUN!

Registration is live...again

Registration is open, spread the word! If you have issues with our registration please give us a call and we can help over the phone. However, please keep in mind that we are working from home, for the most part. So we may not answer, please leave a message and we will call you back ASAP. Our director receives an email when someone leaves a voicemail. (406) 243-5295

Restructuring of camp session 1

We are unable to operate specific themed sessions due to restrictions on specific activities. For this reason we will have to change our original theme for some sessions. As of today, we have only changed one session. If we feel we need to make changes to other sessions we will communicate those changes.

Session 1: Original focus of climbing skills will be changed to Outdoor Activities. For more information about some of the activities we have planned please visit: K-5th Camp and scroll down to the “Weekly Sessions” section.

Taking fewer campers in session 1-3

We will be limiting camp enrollment to 80 campers per session. So please register as soon as you can. If we are full we will accept people on the waitlist and will contact you if a spot opens up.

Sessions 4-9

We are currently planning on operating sessions 4-9. Of course, as we all know, times are very dynamic and we will continue to follow recommendations set by the State of Montana, Missoula County Health Department and the University.

Session 10

The University of Montana has decided to begin the academic year on August 17. Therefore, we are unable to offer our originally scheduled session 10. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Pre Rec, After Rec and Camp Hours

After Rec will be happening! Our last update on May 15 stated that we would not have pre & after rec during the first three sessions. However, now that we are in phase 2 of reopening we are able to offer after rec (3:45-5:30p). We’ve decided not to offer pre rec because we typically do not have the numbers to support the staff needed to follow County Health COVID guidelines. We will, however, have regular camp drop off a half hour earlier than we have in previous years, 8:00-8:30am.

Swim instruction & free swim

Unfortunately, the Grizzly Pool is currently closed and swim lessons will not be offered during the camp season 2020. We know our swim lessons are a huge draw to our camps, we are sorry we are unable to offer them.

Field Trips and 3rd Party Guests

As of today, we are unable to transport children to and from our originally planned field trips. Therefore, we are cancelling all June field trips. Also, we will not have any 3rd party guests during the month of June.

Specific COVID-19 Protocols, Procedures, and Policies (During Phase 1 of Reopening MT)

We will have many changes and additions to the way we operate our camp. Below is a brief overview of these changes. We will have more details about all of our protocols pertaining to COVID-19 in our parent handbook. If you have questions in the meantime, please send us an email or give us a call.

We will break camp into two to three separate camps of no more than 50 individuals (includes staff & campers). These camps will be made up of age groups. K & 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 4th & 5th
Our age groups will not be in contact with each other throughout the day.
Drop-off and pickup - will be at three different locations all near the same facility. We will send you detailed information the week prior to camp. We will also ask that all people maintain 6’ separation while checking in their child. We will have cones for a visual assistant.
Our staff will do daily self health assessments.
Weekly parent health assessments for each camper.
14 day quarantine for out-of-state travelers or residence will no longer be required.
We will not be using public transportation or Beach transportation during the month of June.
Cleaning of supplies and equipment daily, and will not be shared between groups of 50.
Our staff will wear masks any time social distancing of 6’ cannot be maintained (outside the groups of 50).
We are not requiring any camper to wear a mask at any time. If you would prefer your child to wear a mask please send them with their own daily.
Dynamic times call for flexibility

We will be closely monitoring any changes within the guidelines given to us by the State of Montana, Missoula County Health Department, and the University of Montana. Our camp will change as they change. This means we could move closer to operating in our normal way, but it also means we could take a step back at any time. We will always communicate when decisions are made that affect the operation of our camp.

All planned activities and themes are subject to change. We ask for your patience and understanding.

University of Montana Campus Recreation Youth Camps is designed to foster a child’s sense of autonomy while exploring all forms of recreation. In doing so, we hope to foster a lifelong love for recreation in the youth of our community.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons the campers will receive swim instruction (Not offered in the month of June, and possibly all summer). It takes a while to finalize all of the details that go into each day outside of the morning themes. We update this information as we confirm special guests and other university and community groups and familiarize ourselves with the talents and skills of our new counselors. While we are busy planning, please feel free to take a look at an overview of the activities from Tuesday and Thursday each week from a previous year.

Each day during the morning session, we check children in between 8:30 and 9 a.m. After check-in we play a large group game with all campers which is coordinated by our counselors. Following the group game, we break the camp into three groups: the Cubs (kindergarten and first graders), the Bears (second- and third-graders) and the Griz (fourth and fifth graders). Although all the children will be focusing on the morning theme of the week, the curriculum is designed to be age-specific for each group.

We break for lunch at noon and typically find a shady or dry location to eat (we ask children to pack their own lunches). After children finish their lunches, we facilitate free play by letting the children choose the activity. They can pick from a variety of options such as a large game of capture the flag, sidewalk chalk, reading books or tag games. From 1-3:15 p.m., we break the children into age groups. On swim lesson days, we break them up into three groups according to age and swim abilities. Each group is in the pool for about 45 minutes. The first 30 minutes is swim lessons and the last 15 is free swim. While one group is in the pool, the others take part in the activities listed below (some of these activities will be updated as we secure guests and get to know our counselors abilities and special skills).
