Book Event with George Simpson Description:
About the Book “Odyssey of the Flathead Indian Reservation & Public Law 280” offers an in-depth look at the complex and evolving landscape of policing and public policy in Western Montana. This region is known for its stunning vistas, rich cultural heritage, and unique challenges in the criminal justice arena. This book focuses on the Flathead Indian Reservation, home to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. It explores the interplay of Indigenous and Anglo-American legal systems over the past 400 years. At the heart of this book is Public Law 280, a critical federal statute that has shaped law enforcement on Indian reservations across the country. On the Flathead Indian Reservation, the law has had a profound impact on both tribal and non-tribal communities, creating a heterogeneous criminal justice policy that requires a deeper understanding. The book examines the origins of this law, its evolution, and how it continues to affect the daily lives of those living in this region.
