Event description
Evening: May 23, 2023 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Morning: May 25, 2023 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Location: Join us this month for a new saunter location! Milltown State Park Overlook Trailhead
COST: $5 MNHC members/$10 non-members.
Bring your curiosity and your own naturalist knowledge and join MNHC Naturalist Ser Anderson on a naturalist saunter. We will focus on exploring the changing seasons, making observations, following our curiosity, and learning from each other. Whether you are an experienced naturalist or just starting out, this walk is for you! Everyone has something to learn and knowledge to share.
Milltown State Park Overlook Trailhead
Location Info: The site of a federal Superfund dam removal and river restoration project, Milltown State Park is a small but diverse landscape, ranging from restored river bottoms and mature cottonwood stands to a conifer forested bluff above the confluence and dramatic rock cliffs over the Clark Fork River. The multitude of habitats are home to a wide range of birds and plants. The overlook area trail is mostly flat for the first .2 miles and then switchbacks down fairly steeply to the floodplain below. The mile-long loop around a series of ponds on the floodplain is mostly flat. Sections of the trail are very narrow making this location not ideal for strollers, walkers, or wheelchairs. Hiking poles recommended.
Directions: Starting in East Missoula, head northeast on Highway 200. Turn right onto Speedway Avenue by the Sha-Ron Fishing Access. Turn left onto Deer Creek Road (before Speedway goes up a hill). Follow Deer Creek Road around a big curve through the Canyon River Golf Club, under I-90, past one Milltown Dam SP parking area and bear left as the pavement ends to drive up the hill to the overlook trailhead parking area.
Group size is capped at 10 people.
Registration is required.
