Beginner friendly and fun! A unique bonding experience and a chance to have a go on the potter's wheel without having to commit to a long-term class! In these sessions, a parent and teen will join a Clay Studio of Missoula teaching artist to learn the bare basics on the electric potter's wheel! This novel skill is fun and messy to learn, and provides a great activity to do together that will keep everyone busy! During these two-hour sessions, a teaching artist will go over how to throw a very basic pot step-by-step. Participants will then have a chance to give it a go and create cylinder and bowl forms on the wheel. At the end of the night, each participant will choose their two favorite pots of the evening to have glazed and fired as a cool memento of the experience that can even be functional! This is a great chance for creative adults to show their favorite teens a unique creative hobby or show off their skills, or for new arrivals to try something new together!

Only young people age 12 and older are allowed to enroll in these sessions alongside a trusted adult. At the Clay Studio of Missoula, we expect every student to be able to handle themselves with this power tool largely independently. Students must also have the responsibility and commitment to tackle the onerous mud mess they make at the end of the night, as every student must participate in communal clean up. This is also a concern of health and well-being: the potter's wheel is novel and cool, but the process can be tedious and frustrating to learn. And with adult-sized equipment, it's safer and more comfortable for participating youth to be the right size to sit with both feet on the floor, their knees on the splash pan for stability and proper posture, and still be able to reach the throttle to control their wheel. This helps prevent injuries to the back and neck and gives students the best chance to throw successfully from the start. We've worked with students under 12, and have found time and time again that younger kids are just not ready for this tricky technique, therefore we do not allow exceptions.

Each person on the pair ticket can choose their two favorite pots of the night to keep, which take roughly 1 month to fire. Check our pick-up web page periodically beginning about 4 weeks after the session, when your class date is listed you can stop by the studio main building during open hours to pick up your pottery. Don't worry if you don't see your class posted right away: works are kept on hand for 3 months post firing to ensure plenty of time for pick up. Pick up page updates once weekly. If you don't see your class listed by 6 weeks post-session, please email the office for a status update at info@theclaystudioofmissoula.org and we will get back to you ASAP. Please refrain from calling, we have a small, busy staff, and can most flexibly help via email.
