Lecture: Building Community in Difficult Times Description:
About the speaker, Travis McAdam:
In this time of disinformation and discord, it's easy to question if we'll ever be able to see eye-to-eye with our neighbors on the other side of the political aisle. An expert on the challenges communities in the region face, Travis McAdam is also versed in the strategies that have helped them choose discourse over discord and unity over dissension. He will explore how to have calm, productive dialogues about difficult questions.
"We face a situation where many of our communities are divided right now. We need to understand the challenges we face and come together to address real problems,” McAdam says. “We should never underestimate the power of people coming together to do good work.”
Travis McAdam directs the Montana Human Rights Network’s Combating White Nationalism and Defending Democracy project. During his almost 20 years with the organization, he has researched, written about, and helped communities respond to white nationalists, paramilitary militias, and other Far Right extremists.
McAdam is a nationally recognized expert on right-wing extremist movements, and his analysis and writings have been featured in national and international publications. He holds degrees in journalism and sociology from the University of Montana. He currently serves on the board of the Southwestern Wildlands Chapter of Wild Montana, a statewide conservation group. He’s also an officer for the Mai Wah Society, which operates a museum in the former Chinatown district of Butte, MT, that preserves and interprets the community’s Asian heritage.
