Description:
Winter Session: Building Furniture and Large Sculpture
Wednesdays, 6-9PM
TAKES PLACE IN ANNEX UNIT A (1110-A Hawthorne)
January 7 to February 25
Working access continues through March 15
Teaching Artist: Jack Schwarze
$400 members / $415 nonmembers
This class will cover intermediate/advanced handbuilding skills. Students should have a grasp on basics like using score and slip, coils, pinch pots, and slabs.
In this class, massive ceramic expert Jack Schwarze will teach students how to create large scale sculpture for use as furniture or simply as large scale art. Building at large scale requires special knowledge of reinforcement and building techniques to ensure the structure can bear weight, and prevent damage like cracking through the stress of drying and firing. You’ll learn the techniques and cadence to build large, structural ceramic works successfully. The goal of this class is to see one large, structural piece through from initial concept to firing.
These special sculpture studio classes offer more liberal access to open studio time for students to approach larger, more challenging pieces. 8 weeks of class will include hands-on instruction during designated class time, the last two weeks of the session will be independently scheduled by the instructor to coordinate firing and finishing times, and students will continue to have working access through the final two weeks, without scheduled class conflicts.
Studio access outside of class meeting times for students enrolled in 1110-A Sculpture Studio programs will be available to students when other programs are not are not in session. Appointments will not be necessary, as classes will each have a unique code students are permitted to use to access the space throughout the class session between 8am-9pm.
Requirements: Have taken a beginning pottery or other basic clay course, and have a handle on fundamental techniques such as score and slip, pinch pots, coils, and slabs.
Included in class fee:
First 2 bags (50 pounds) of clay
Additional clay $25 per bag
Firing fees for a maquette and for large scale work related to class created during the class period.
