Description:
Note: The library's power went out on December 10th when we originally scheduled this, so we are trying again on February 4th at 5:30pm in Cooper Room A!
Our votes hold power, otherwise they wouldn’t subvert them. We must raise our voices in the 2026 midterms and elect leaders who represent all of us, not just the billionaires. In preparation, we will be screening a powerful film and two PBS shorts. After the screening we will have a discussion and Q&A with a representative of the Missoula County Elections Office on Montana's elections procedures and regulations as well as challenges on the horizon. We will also hear an update on the Transparent Election Initiative that aims to end corporate dark money spending in Montana elections.
Brave New Films’ ‘SUPPRESSED AND SABOTAGED 2024: The Fight to Vote’ is a tool in the arsenal of every concerned American, sounding the alarm on voter suppression and election subversion ahead of November 2026. This 30-minute documentary film focuses on the swelling wave of efforts to disenfranchise voters across the U.S., with the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race between Stacey Abrams and Brian Kemp providing a case study for understanding today’s restrictive measures. In 2023 alone, 150 bills were introduced to restrict voting access. SUPPRESSED AND SABOTAGED 2024 is a rallying call against the calculated, unconstitutional, and racist attacks intended to destroy democracy in the United States.
PBS's "Civics Made Easy", hosted by Ben Sheehan, breaks down the complex world of American government and civic participation. Designed to empower and inform, the series makes understanding civics both accessible and engaging for all. We will be watching "How Elections Work" and "Who Has the Right to Vote in America". Each episode is roughly 11 minutes.
