Description:
Informed Citizen Series: Take Control of Your Informational Environment: How Fake News Spreads
In a world where most of us get our news from social media, and the term “fake news” has lost almost all meaning, what can we do to take control of our information environments? Fake news isn’t something that happens to us. It happens with our participation. This is a practical, real-world program geared towards an adult audience. It provides actionable tips on how to approach news—especially news we see on social media—so that we think critically about our role in the information ecosystem. Participants will come away with useful strategies and sources to help them swim against the tide of the information tsunami.
This program is presented by Julie Edwards, a former public librarian and Instructional Designer with Niche Academy, as well as, an author of two books and many articles. In 2017 she was awarded a Fulbright to teach in the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of Botswana. Presentation is held in the Large Meeting Room. 6:30 PM
