Allies for GLBT Equality
10:00 AM University Congregational Church
Description:
Fifteen years ago, the University Congregational, United Church of Christ (UCC) voted to be “open and affirming” to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) members. In celebration of the anniversary of that vote, the UCC will partner with the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) of Missoula to offer an “Allies for GLBT Equality in the Faith Community” workshop. The workshop will be hosted at the UCC at 401 University Ave. on Saturday, April 12th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During the same week, UCC will also be exhibiting the “Shower of Stoles Project,” a collection of over a thousand liturgical stoles and other sacred items representing the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people of faith. UCC’s Rev. Amy Carter explained it is vital that the church “…recognize that advocacy for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people continues to be an important role for the church in our community given the recent violent attacks.”
NCBI is proud to be able to offer this workshop free to the public thanks to a generous grant from the Pride Montana Foundation and workshop sponsorship from the UCC.
The “Allies for GLBT Equality in the Faith Community” workshop will bring together heterosexual allies who want to be more effective in shifting homophobic attitudes and in working for inclusion and equality. Participants will develop skills for responding to anti-gay bias within our families, workplaces, and communities. A participant of a previous NCBI “Allies for GLBT Equality” workshop said the most effective part of the workshop was “…identifying homophobia in my own life and behaviors”. Another participant shared, “I learned skills that will really help me to be a better ally and stand up for my gay and lesbian friends.”
To register for the workshop, call NCBI at 541-6891 or download the registration form from their website at www.ncbimissoula.org.
