Description:
Pet Fest returns on Saturday, Aug. 18th from 10am-3pm at Caras Park.

Last August, it was the 80 plus dachshunds that stole the show in the Wiener Dog Dash and brought hundreds of people to Caras Park to show off their own animals, enter contests, learn from vendors and experts how to better care for their pets, visit with shelter animals, and adopt a four-legged or feathered friend. On Saturday, August 18th, Pet Fest returns for the 7th annual event. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded in the 2012 Doggie Olympics which include events such as the Peanut Butter Lick, Best Dressed Pet, Dunking for Hot Dogs, Musical Sit, Obedience Baseball, Agility Course and the ever popular Wiener Dog Dash.
Pet Fest promotes responsible pet ownership and adoptable pets from local animal shelters and rescues. Shelters, rescues and vendors include the Western Montana Humane Society, Missoula County Animal Control, Flathead County Animal Shelter, Animal Wonders, Life Savers Animal Rescue, Great Pyrenees Rescue, Animeals, Montana's Parrot and Exotic Bird Sanctuary, Alpine Canine, Murdoch's, Showcase Pet Grooming and more. Pet Fest's premier event, the Wiener Dog Dash, with the Li'l Smokies, Frankfurter and Bratwurst age categories, will kick off at 2:00. Mayor John Engen, will again call the races. Last year, Mayor Engen told the crowd that all of his own pets are adopted, including Moose, a Siamese cross cat adopted two years ago at Pet Fest.

Pet Fest coincides with International Homeless Animals' Day when organizations around the world come together on the third Saturday of August to raise awareness about the pet overpopulation epidemic. Thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA, the Humane Society of Western Montana will be offering FREE microchips for the first 170 pets at their booth. They will also be giving away free dog collars, cat collars, pet ID tags, and magnets. Special Pet Fest adoption fees will be offered and all pets will be spayed or neutered, current on vaccinations. Admission to Pet Fest is free but visitors are encouraged to bring a donation of pet food, including bird food, to help feed shelter animals. All donations are divided amongst the participating shelters and rescues at the end of Pet Fest. Even Animal Wonders , a rescue organization for exotics, will be at Pet Fest to educate the public and find home for adoptable exotic animals.
