The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "amplify", by Renée Brown.
After earning her MFA at the University of North Texas, Renée Brown came to Montana in 2006 as an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena. Following this, she completed a two month residency at Red Lodge Clay Center. She then arrived in Missoula as a long term resident at the Clay Studio of Missoula. Brown spent two years falling in love with Missoula and, at the end of her residency, decided to put down roots here. She now maintains her ceramic studio in the historic Brunswick Building downtown.
Those who know Brown's work are familiar with her functional pottery. However, for many years she has been flying under the radar with a body of sculptural work. On First Friday July 6th, she will make her sculptural debut at the Brink Gallery.
"This work has been kicking around in my head for years, and I have shown some smaller pieces around town. When Jennifer offered me the opportunity to show at her gallery, my first thought was a resounding YES! Since then, I have been in my studio with an energy I haven't felt in a long time. I'm very excited, a little nervous, and really grateful for opportunity to show this work for the first time in such a beautiful gallery," Says Brown.
Brown's work takes its inspiration from mineral specimens, found or polished stones, bones, and shells. "I introduce the shapes and textures of these objects to my imagination and allow myself to expand the possibilities of surface and composition beyond what might rationally be found in nature."
