Description:
Historic Roxy Restoration Grand Reopening 1930s Style Celebration Party & Special Screening of The Grapes of Wrath
On Friday, December 12 from 5 - 9 pm, the historic Roxy Theater will officially host a Grand Reopening Celebration, sponsored by the International Wildlife Media Center & Film Festival. Over the past six months, the Roxy Theater in downtown Missoula, has undergone a historic restoration/transformation that included an all new historically accurate Art Deco façade - new paint, new marquee, new lights, new reader board all designed to reflect the theater’s original look when it first opened in Missoula in 1937. Named for the famous Roxy Theater in NY, the Roxy Theater Missoula burned to the ground in 1994, reopened several years later, then quickly shut its doors and remained closed until the International Wildlife Film Festival bought the historic theater in 2003.
Now a year round media center, the Roxy Theater has been undergoing a major facelift on the outside, reminiscent of its glory days from the Art Deco era. Inside, the Roxy took a major step into the future with the purchase of a High Definition Projection system, funded by a grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.
The Roxy Theater will host a Grand Reopening Celebration Party on Friday, December 12th complete with food, music, a silent auction, prizes and a special screening of the 1930’s film, The Grapes of Wrath, and a special Q&A with The Grapes of Wrath expert, filmmaker and actor and UM Media Professor, Michael Murphy. This special screening is sponsored by The Big Read through the National Endowment of the Arts with the support of the Montana Historical Society. Tickets for the Celebration Party are $10 each and include food and drink. Everyone is encouraged to dress in 1930s attire and a photographer will be on hand to capture the moment. Lots of special prizes and giveaways will also be offered as a special thank you to the community.
