The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition entitled "Mitigation Notes", by Edgar Smith.
Smith's recent body of work represents a response to public vs. private land issues in the Northwest. The work for the February, 2013 exhibit at the Brink Gallery focus specifically on the Clark Fork River drainage in Montana, from Silver Bow Creek and Butte, to areas just west of the Missoula valley. The concepts surrounding these works range from the impact of heavy industry, to simply celebrating the Clark Fork watershed's unique qualities. The paintings are map-like aerial views of industrial sites, including the recently established remediation ponds of the Opportunity/Anaconda Superfund site, built in conjunction with the Milltown site clean up. The wall installation, made from Cottonwood bark, beeswax, and mine tailings, functions as a metaphor of the Clark Fork River and its complex history.
Raised and schooled in the Midwest, Edgar Smith acquired a "rust belt aesthetic" at a very young age. Both the power and the devastation of heavy industry made a huge impression. Since moving to Montana in 1991, Smith has found that the archaic, or Romantic definition of the sublime (awe mixed with horror!) co-exists with the contemporary definition (exalted, majestic etc.) in the western landscape. Exploited, ravaged expanses can loom just behind a ridge from pristine peaks and prairies. Polarities such as this, on environmental, social, and psychological levels continue to inform Smith's work.
Please join us for a reception with the artist on Friday, February 1st, 5 - 8pm.
