Pi Patel grows up in Pondicherry India amidst the noise and excitement of his father's zoo. When the family and zoo board a ship to emigrate to Canada, the ship sinks over the Pacific leaving only five survivors in a lifeboat: Pi, a hyena, a zebra, an orang-utan, and a Royal Bengal tiger.
