Headwaters Dance Co. presents its 2008 Gala Concert at the Missoula Children’s Theater, Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2008. This year’s repertory features Part III of the Multi-year Montana Suite Project, inspired by the Rocky Mountain Front and Montana’s rivers. Choreographed by world-renowned, New York contemporary dance choreographer Lar Lubovitch (www.lubovitch.org), the 16-minute piece features a contagious swirl of movement set to a rolling sound score created by Mr. Lubovitch and UM Sound Design students. The score combines many versions of the old song “Gather by the River” and natural sound effects. Mr. Lubovitch will be on hand for post-performance talk backs with the audience.
Also on the company’s concert roster will be:
-- “Straight Duet,” a poignantly humorous duet about newlyweds, by New York choreographers Larry Keigwin and Nicole Wolcott. (Nicole is a Helena native and former member of this company.) In it dancers Kitty Sailer and Brian Gerke negotiate those delicate, potentially awkward moments of their “First” Night alone, set to opera music and using partnering that takes advantage of the trampoline-like characteristics of a large mattress.
-- “III,” a tightly crafted trio, set to haunting music by Meredith Monk, choreographed by Taiwanese choreographer Chia Chi Chiang, it is inspired by life on the limited space of a small island. The three dancers, Kitty Sailer, Jessica Mulette and Sarah Bortis squeeze their lunging, reaching bodies through the narrow gaps created by the other two, narrowly missing each other or sometimes catching and throwing each other out of the way.
-- “Still,” also choreographed by Chia Chi Chiang, is a solo for dancer Brian Gerke in a box! Rather like a snail testing the waters outside its protective shell, Gerke continually emerges and retreats from his “home.”
-- Additionally, Headwaters’ Artistic Director, Amy Ragsdale, will contribute three new pieces: “The Game,” a fast-paced, jumping, diving game with balls, exploring the shifting alliances of human relationships; “I Feel Safer Now – Ten Steps to Fascism” a darkly humorous exploration of the effects of post-9/11 travel regulations and emergency preparedness warnings, set to word-based sound score by UM Music professor Charles Nichols; and “50,” a celebratory solo about the joys and trials of turning 50.
