Description:
David Peters workshop
Can you dig it? Discovering Local Clays

June 30 & July 1
10:00am - 4:00pm

Have you always wanted to dig and process your own clay? This workshop will show you how. David will lead a field trip around Missoula, sharing information about geologic processes that pertain to clay, as well as ways to identify clays and take samples. Back in the studio we will process and test the clays we dig. The information gained from these tests will inform us as to what the materials can be used for. Students will then experiment with their newly found clays to create simple forms.

The workshop will include lectures about the historical and contemporary use of local materials in the production of ceramics, geological background and tips for finding clay in your area. David will also share images of his own work, which is created with locally dug clays. All skill levels are welcome.

$185 for non-members
$175 for members, seniors, and students
tuition includes materials, firing, and lunch both days

David Peters was born and raised in Amarillo Texas where he began making pots about eleven years ago. He earned his bachelors of art from Utah State University. Upon graduating he became a resident at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena Montana where he began using local materials for his work. He is now doing his graduate work at Montana State University where he continues to study and experiment with indigenous ceramic materials.
