Description:
YWCA Missoula Goes Global with Women's Empowerment Project
Staffers recount experiences working on women's issues in Cambodia and Vietnam

Bring you lunch and an open mind to learn more about the exciting developments in women's empowerment worldwide. The YWCA's January brown bag lecture, entitled "Embracing Asia," will highlight YWCA staff members' recent travels to Southeast Asia through The Women's Empowerment Project - a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the University of Montana Maureen & Mike Mansfield Center. The lecture will take place at the YWCA on Jan. 18, 2013, from noon to 1 p.m.

In August 2012, Rohanna Erin, Elizabeth Harrison and Patty Murphy traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam to share professional and cultural experiences with partnering non-profit organizations. Topics covered at the brown bag lecture include girls' education in Cambodia, engaging men in domestic violence prevention in Vietnam and peeling back the cultural layers of both countries.

"The YWCA is dedicated to empowering women and eliminating racism in the Missoula community," said Cindy Weese, YWCA Missoula executive director. "But we are grateful and excited to be carrying those visions with us across cultural and geographical distances."

Up to 70 percent of women and girls in the world experience physical or sexual violence perpetrated by men, according to the World Health Organization. This alarming statistic is compounded by the fact that less than 2 cents of every development dollar go to girls.

"I believe that the more we can build community and coalition across group and international lines the stronger our programs and the safer our communities will be worldwide," said Harrison, the YWCA's communications manager.

Please join us Jan. 18 at the YWCA at noon to learn more about how we can cross cultural divides to promote learning and empowerment of women across the globe.
