Description:
- The University of Montana Department of Drama/Dance is pleased to offer The House of Blue Leaves, a surreal lampoon of an atypical New York clan. The House of Blue Leaves runs in the Masquer Theatre of the Performing Arts and Radio/Television Center on campus April 22-26 and April 29-May 3, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.
John Guare’s Tony Award-winning black comedy reveals the absurdity of a blue-collar American family and their grotesque obsession with celebrity. Set in Queens during the Pope’s 1965 visit, the plot follows the misadventures of a dissatisfied zookeeper who dreams of Hollywood songwriting success while his girlfriend longs for high fashion and famous friends. Three wayward nuns, an AWOL soldier’s farcical terrorist plot, and the zookeeper’s unbalanced wife—aptly named Bananas—contribute to the hilarious confusion of this darkly comic satire. Guare’s prescient play holds the mirror up to our own secret aspirations of grandeur.
