Thursday, July 29th: Bruce Threlkeld

My roots can be traced to an eclectic mix of pop, reggae, rock, and bluegrass. I listened to a lot of radio hits as a teenager, which had an indelible effect on my playing style, songwriting and arranging (for better or worse). My first professional appearance was when I was 16, drumming for a church dance. Four years later, with an acoustic guitar, I began playing coffee shops and bars in Florida, and then Texas, with my friend, Rick Taylor, with whom I have shared many a gig. Along with Rick, I drummed and sang with the Atlanta-based band Right as Rain, beginning in the latter part of the eighties. This band had a successful multi-year run on the “college circuit,” recording two CD’s for the independent label, DB records. The recordings, “Undertown,” and, “Stop, Look, and Listen,” were produced by Brendan O’Brien and Rob Gal. In 1993, after leaving Right as Rain, I began playing in North Carolina with Matt Manning. We recorded a demo in the summer of 1996 called, “When the Darkness Fades Away.” I moved to Missoula, Montana, in 1997 and began playing in the Cory Heydon Band, drumming on Cory’s Tapas Records debut release. This stint lasted for two years, after which followed a year of solo guitar gigs in Montana. While continuing to book the occasional guitar solo gig, I also began live and studio drum duties over the next 5 years for the Tom Catmull Band, John Floridis, Bob Wire, Greg Leake, The Kent Curtiss Band, and the Country Kings. I currently play with several Montana bands including The Bopadips, John Floridis (and his band, Burning River), The Country Kings, Quartet Caribe, and The Acousticals. I also worked and played summers at Camp Highlander during the 80's and 90's, a wonderful camp for boys and girls, located outside of Asheville N.C., in the heart of the Appalachian mountains. I have recorded several albums and cd's of campfire songs (some traditional, some originals, and some you've probably never heard at a campfire, unless you went to CH). I enjoy hearing from former campers and staff, so send me an email if you feel so inclined. I’ve been blessed to play with many great musicians throughout my career, and I’m thankful to have learned so much from these folks. I manage to give back a little each week to the next generation of musicians, by offering private instruction on drums, guitar, and, most recently, banjo and mandolin.
