Sam Manno
5:00 PM    Gallery Saintonge

Description:
Gallery Saintonge is excited to announce the upcoming exhibit/event from the 5th of September with local Missoula artist Sam Manno.

Sam Manno is notorious for finding ways to probe our thinking and engage his audience in its own sort of process. Creating scenarios and situations where being a passive observer is not so much an option – whether it is through subject matter or performance/interaction, Manno stirs a level of confrontation. Constantly raising question, Manno’s work ranges in format and offers refreshing insight and introspection.

from the 5th of September addresses the unfolding event of a few hours of one day and the days that follow, stumbled upon as if a catalyst. The exhibit entails a sense of unpredictability and internal stirring. Given the Missoula enthusiasm and participation in the First Friday Art Walk, Manno will be documenting the audience at Gallery Saintonge on First Friday, September 5th. The evening will begin with a mostly blank gallery space. As people arrive at the gallery for the Opening Reception, they will be confronted with having a Polaroid photograph taken of their face. Provided with a Sharpie marker to make their signature on it and a silver thumbtack to hang it on the gallery wall, the show will build as the evening transpires.

While much of Manno’s work is of a somewhat unintentionally voyeuristic nature – a witness, so to say; in this work, he takes much more of an in-the-thick-of-it role. This sort of Polaroid-based work is not new to him. In the 1980s, he took Polaroid photographs by confrontationally engaging strangers with a project he did at Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market and the Lincoln Park Zoo, among other locations.

Considering that the Polaroid Corporation is no longer making Polaroid film (as of June 2008), this format of photography is a dying medium. These portraits, documents of this event, will be some of the last to hold this instant film format.

Sam Manno currently resides in Missoula, Montana. He is actively involved in the community, and the world at large, as a bearer of many hats.
