Wings to Wheels: Inspiring Others to Safely Enjoy the Outdoors
Tuesday, February 12 @ 6:30 PM
Join REI for an evening with Joe Stone whose mission is to inspire other to safely get more involved with the outdoors. Joe was involved in a speed flying accident in the mountains of Montana that has left him diagnosed as an incomplete c7 quadriplegic. Shortly after the accident Joe decided that he was not going to let this disability define him and he set a goal to hand cycle the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park, MT the day before the one-year anniversary of his accident.
Part of Joe's message is to make sure you are fully prepared both with the proper gear and training. Making sure that the risks you take is as calculated as possible. His flight that day was not as calculated as it should have been and he paid a big price because of it and he wants to help others learn from his mistake.
Joe and his fiancé are working to start a nonprofit that will provide outdoor adventure for people with disabilities. Their first goal is to host a seven-day spinal cord injury outdoor adventure camp in Northwestern Montana. The camp will consist of white water rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, off road hand cycling, and zip lining down Whitefish Mountain.
Joe's mission is to inspire others to safely get more involved with the outdoors. He truly believes in how therapeutic the outdoors can be. It was a huge part of his life before the accident and has pulled him from what could have been a very dark place after the accident which is he is now such an advocate for outdoor recreation.
