Big Sky Films Series continues the 2008 season
with the independent feature documentary "Obscene". Barney
Rosset is the greatest American publisher of the twentieth century and
the most influential cultural figure that you haven't heard of. Under
Rosset, Grove Press and Evergreen Review fought decisive battles,
including many before the state and federal supreme courts, defeated
legal censorship, and opened American life to new and dangerous
currents of freedom. But Rosset's public fight against hypocrisy and
injustice is inextricable from his tumultuous personal life: the same
unyielding, quixotic, reckless energy that upended centuries of law
brought Rosset perilously close to self- destruction and exacted a
cost from friends, colleagues and family.
The Big Sky Film Series is a periodic monthly screening series
highlighting traditional and innovative nonfiction film and video. It
is held the first Friday of the month as part of downtown Missoula,
Montana's "Art Walk." All screenings are held in the
Historic Wilma Theater and are free and open to the public. The series
is programmed by the staff of the Big Sky Documentary Film
Festival.
The Big Sky Film Series is a program of the
Big Sky Film Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. The
mission of the Big Sky Film Institute is to celebrate and promote the
art of nonfiction filmmaking, to establish Missoula as a center of
documentary filmmaking, exhibition and criticism, and to encourage
media literacy by fostering public understanding and appreciation of
documentary film.
