The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "it may take longer", by Renee Couture.
"It may take longer is firmly rooted in my living in the Pacific Northwest timber country. Within my community, there is a longstanding political conflict between environmental activists and industry. Hot political topics too often become black and white, right and wrong, us and them issues. A divisive system of binaries. Two sides debating. "This" vs. "that". I wonder what would happen if the debate shifted from jobs vs. environment, exploitation vs. protection toward a discourse focused on ecological integrity and social well-being? This body of work is my attempt at making sense of a history I was absent from as a means of understanding my own present."
Currently living on seven acres in rural southern Oregon, Couture graduated from Buena Vista University (Storm Lake, IA) with a BA in Studio Art and Spanish in 1999. She spent the next four years traveling throughout the United States and South America. She moved to Oregon in 2004 after completing Peace Corps service. Couture has taught a range of art courses in children's camps in the United States and abroad. She received her MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier, VT, in 2010. Couture's work has exhibited nationally and she currently teaches in the Fine Art Department at Umpqua Community College.
