Controversial Issues Process workshop

The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center and the Missoula chapter of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) are teaming up to offer the Controversial Issue Process workshop on Friday, March 14th, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Peace Center. Betsy Mulligan, Executive Director of the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center believes people interested in making peace, “… need comfort and skill to invite in people with wide varieties of opinion to make peace in the middle.” Also, she explained the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center is “… searching for ways to move forward to bridge the gaps that divide people.”
The Controversial Issue Process workshop offered through NCBI teaches those important skills for addressing controversial issues and opportunities to bridge gaps. Through a positive, interactive process, participants will select an issue that is divisive among the group and learn how to listen first to the underlying concerns on all sides. In creating an opportunity for groups who are divided to understand each other’s positions, participants will be able to identify common ground and reframe the debate in a way that allows for the generation of real solutions.
A participant of a previous Controversial Issues Process workshop said, “This was a great class. I learned skills that I can use in all aspects of life, not just at work. Thank you.”
Another participant suggested the most effective part of the workshop was “…learning what others’ ideas are and how best to solve a controversy.”
