Sean Tyrrell: Cry of a Dreamer
8:00 PM The Loft
Description:
The Jeannette Rankin Peace Center in conjunction with the UM Center for Irish Studies is pleased to present “Cry of a Dreamer: The Life of John Boyle O’Reilly in Song and Story” as portrayed by singer Seán Tyrrell. “Cry of a Dreamer” will be performed at the Loft above Higgins Alley, 8 p.m. on May 9.
“Cry Of the Dreamer” tells the amazing story of a lesser-known Irish hero, John Boyle O’Reilly. In this show, Tyrrell traces O’Reilly’s journey from early childhood set against a backdrop of famine and revolution to penal servitude in Australia and finally his great escape from there to the USA. Songs in the show allow Tyrrell to connect history of the 19th century to modern sensibilities, making the story very accessible to all audiences. Songs are drawn from a wide variety of sources: Oscar Wilde, Francis Ledwidge, Bob Dillon, Louise Mc Neice, John Lennon, Skin The Goat, and traditional Irish tunes. These are an integral part of the tale and illustrate how O’Reilly was way ahead of his time as an adventurer, poet, and humanitarian. Using an array of instruments, Seán weaves effortlessly between narrative, instrumental and song.
Seán Tyrrell was chosen Irish Male Vocalist of the Year for 2005 and lives in County Clare, Ireland.
