The Tragedy & Triumph of Astoria
7:00 PM (America/Denver)
Lolo Community Center
Description:
Fame Local Missoula Author Peter Stark (also Long-Time Writer for Outside Magazine) will talk about his upcoming 2014 book and "The Tragedy & Triumph of Astoria - Challenging the British for the Oregon Country Five Years after the Lewis & Clark Expedition."

Astor and East Coast Politicians wanted to take the contested Oregon Country (Current States of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Western Wyoming and Montana) away from the British by establishing Fort Astoria and populating the area with American Citizens.

Astor was interested more so in creating a Trans-Pacific Trading Company that would include taking furs from the Pacific Coast to China.

Astor sent a group of men and women on an overland route to the West Coast that initially followed the Lewis & Clark Expedition's Missouri River course and their Columbia River course, as well as sending a different group by sea around the tip of South America.

Only 45 of the 60 survived and the grizzly stories of what happened to many of those associated with the journey to the mouth of the Columbia River will be a part of Peter's talk.

In the end, if it had not been for Astor, Astoria and the Astorians... the Oregon Country could easily have become another British Territory.
