Sugar Skull workshop at the OAO Temple Haus
5:15 PM (America/Denver)
OAO Temple Haus
Sugar Skull workshop at the OAO Temple Haus Description:
Sugar Skull Workshops Monday through Friday!

You (as well as your friends and family) are invited to come participate in the annual sugar skull workshops at the multicultural/nonprofit/pagan OAO Temple Haus this week, all week long! These super-fun crafting nights are this Monday through Friday from 5:15pm onward at the OAO Temple at 9463 Upper Miller Creek Road in Missoula (directions below). Please feel free to stop by at any time during ANY of these evening events. These are also *parade prep days,* so we are thankful for everyone's help in making skulls to be freely distributed at the annual Festival of the Dead procession on Dia de los Meurtos in downtown Missoula (November 2nd: 6-8pm). Participants are welcome to take home a few of the skulls they decorate, in addition to helping assemble as many as you feel inspired to create for the parade! Everyone is invited to join in one or more of the crafting nights as well as to march with us in the parade and distribute sugar skulls, sugar cookies and good cheer!

Please note that these workshops and our group involvement in the Day of the Dead Procession are intended as a fun, educational and community-bonding activities that honor the ancestors as well as Mexican, Central American and ancient Aztec traditions. It is through cross-cultural immersions such as these, that we can all come to better understand the world around us. OAO is blessed to have the support of many Mexican citizens and Hispanic/Latino-Americans.

What to bring: OAO encourages guests to bring snacks (organic/sustainable if possible) for everyone to munch on while crafting skulls (optional). This is also a time of year when alcohol may be consumed (also optional), and the most traditional drinks of the season are tequila and wine. (If you plan to drink, please do not consume over the legal limit unless your transportation is prearranged. The events are all-ages, and one must be 21 to consume alcohol.)

These workshops are NO-CHARGE, however donations are encouraged and gratefully accepted, as they help us cover supply costs and labor. All donations are tax-deductible, and receipts are available by request (501c3).

A bit of history: Ancestral sugar skulls (calaveras de azucar) date back to pre-Columbian Central America and are used to fend off evil spirits and provide sustenance for our ancestors. Each year, the Opus Aima Obscura Temple makes these traditional skulls to pass out to the crowd during Missoula's annual Day of the Dead Parade. We craft them lovingly in honor of our own families and for those Missoulians who have loved and lived in the Garden City long before us. Completed skulls are each blessed with a Tarot card and are for home altars, gardens, graveyard offerings and other celebrations of life. Please note that skulls are not intended to be eaten.

Viva la Muerte!
