The Arts :: Art Show
Flowing Waters
5:00 PM (America/Denver)
Hockaday Museum of Art
Description:
Janet Sullivan's exhibit Flowing Waters will be at the Hockaday Museum, September 25. - November 8. This exhibit includes many of her observations of water throughout the seasons and its phases through the water cycle. The show offers much more than just water; the artist also explicates the geology of the places that inspired her to paint.

Pastels are possible the oldest art medium documented, dating back 32,000 years ago in caves at Grotte Chauvet in France. A pastel consists of pure powdered pigment and a binder. When made with permanent pigments and properly cared for, a pastel painting willy endure unchanged for centuries.

The Green Pool. Magma slowly cools and crystallizes into large masses of igneous rock (granite) five or ten miles below the surface. This granite is uplifted to the surface during a mountain-building event. During the mountain building process, the overlying rock is eroded as the granite is uplifted, and the pressure on the granite is reduced. The granite expands and forms fractures or sheet joints parallel to the surface. The granite then erodes in concentric layers (similar to how an onion peels) forming rounded masses called exfoliation domes. As the rocks move down stream they create clear pools of water.
