MAM Book Club: "Writing on the Wall" by Simon Morley Description:
"Writing on the Wall: Word and Image in Modern Art" by Simon Morley asserts that words and language are one of the defining features of modern art. Join us for a book club discussion in MAM's Silver Gallery surrounded by Elizabeth Dove's text-based exhibition, "It Started with Aardvark." This event is free to attend; registration is requested by calling 406.728.0447.

Voices in Contemporary Art Book Club is MAM's newest forum that connects great literature and contemporary art with selected readings about art, artists, art history, and culture. Discussions include a tour of relevant artworks on view in the galleries. MAM's cash bar will offer light refreshments. Receive 10% off your copy of the book in the MAM bookstore following registration. Books are also available for purchase at Fact & Fiction or UM Bookstore, and available on loan from the Missoula Public Library.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Morley explains how artists have harnessed the tension between word and image to form identities, challenge authority, and make sense of a world in constant change. Writing on the Wall uses examples from art such as Dada nonsense words and cadavre exquis, Surrealist painting-poems, Constructivist typographies, oriental calligraphy, and postwar gestural painting, as well as how the mass media have adapted artistic devices in propaganda, typography, and advertising.
