Noon- 3:00 PM DANCING TO LIVE MUSIC with A'isha Azar and Safar-$75

This class will explore the main concepts for dancing with live music from the point of view of both musicians and dancers, in order to help us understand how best to work together as a team! We will talk about what dancers and musicians need to know to put on the very best performances TOGETHER. The class will include information on how performances are structured and what might be expected. We will work through a performance in a logical and viable structure, focusing on creating a show with integrity and entertainment value. This information will be largely based on American Oriental performances, with some overlap into how performances are structured in countries of origin. Handouts will outline the basic structure and give hints on how to make the most of a live music performance. Participants should bring veils and finger cymbals. There will be a lot of interactive time in class.

3:30-5:30 A MIDDLE EASTERN DRUM WORKSHOP with Roger Sumner-$50

This class is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about Middle Eastern rhythms and techniques. Roger will discuss applying music theory to Middle Eastern rhythms, teach basic rhythms and tempos and also go into more complex rhythms and drumming techniques.

Sunday, July 23rd, 12:30PM - 3:30PM THE ART OF THE DRUM SOLO, with A'isha and Roger-$60

This class will include a discussion of the differences between how dancers and drummers work together in western countries and countries of origin. Examples of and movements for three common structures in drum solo work. (What to do besides shimmies and locks!) We will explore the drum solo as taqsim and there will be a comprehensive hand-out.
