For 175 years, photography has transformed our understanding of the world around us. This lecture will explore some of the major photographers, technical advances and photographic movements that have both inspired us and challenged us. Given the rich traditions of painting, drawing, and etching, can a photograph ever be called art?

Herbert Swick, a docent at the Montana Museum of Art & Culture, still uses traditional film and darkroom techniques in his own work as a photographer.
