Demetra Perros - Roots & Wings
7:00 PM (America/Denver)
Shakespeare & Co
Description:
Friday, March 27th: Nonfiction. Demetra Perros performs from her one-woman stage play Roots & Wings: A Memoir of Trauma and Transformation. 7 pm.

Roots & Wings is a nonfiction stage play that captures the decade-long journey of a young performing artist blindsided by the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder. Demetra was diagnosed with PTSD in 2005, after taking a controversial antimalarial medicine during a study abroad program. Her life as an active, confident youth was replaced by a period of fear, isolation, and shame. But this isn't the story of her demise; this is the story of her transformation. Invoking her Greek heritage for strength, Demetra begins to reclaim her body and artistic voice. She happens upon other avenues of expression that satisfy her need for creativity, all the while battling the psychological effects and chronic illnesses associated with trauma.

Demetra received an MFA in creative nonfiction from Emerson College. Through dance, theatre, and writing, she educates others about PTSD and advocates for mental health awareness.
